The No Heat Challenge!

I have started a challenge in my Naturally We group on Facebook  called the "No Heat Challenge". Using excessive amount of heat in hair can cause major damage. Although I know some people that must use their blow dryer it really isn't necessary at all. The challenge is for at least 6 months. I myself do not plan on using heat for a very long time. I don't see the use for it or any advantages for it. Natural afro-textured hair is delicate and should be treated and cared for as such. Of course their are natural heat protectants like grape seed oil. There is still not a 100% chance that there won't be some kind of damage. I have seen way too many cases of naturals that have had to transition because of heat damage. So if you are reading this and you are thinking "Hey I would like to do it" then go for it!  Send me an email of your progress if you want to. I would love to know if you notice a change in the overall health of your hair. Have a great curly day!

What I use

I have been asked what I use for my hair on a daily or not not so daily basis. I am not what would be considered a "product junkie". Basically, the recipes that I have put on this blog is what I use. I do more homemade treatments for my hair and face. As for shampoo and conditioner, I use SheaMoisture coconut and hibiscus for for thick and curly hair. I love their products! The curl and style milk, curling smoothie, shampoo and most recently the curling souffle gel.  During my transition I used the Raw Shea Butter Moisture shampoo and conditioner. It works for me! For most of the people (not all but most) I know that uses it really likes it as well. It is all natural and organic without any of those harmful extras. It also smells great. They have a line of products for just about everyone and hair types. Also, there are products of lotions and oils for skin. When I have the urge to wear my hair straight or to blow my hair out (which is rarely) I protect it with grape seed oil.

So, I am a simple natural. I just don't feel the need to go around trying out a bunch of different products. Between SheaMoisture and my "do it myself" homemade recipes.   I'm pretty happy with the health of my hair. At the end of the day that is what it comes down to. Is your hair healthy?

Egg yolk for the hair

So I was asked a question on egg yolks for the hair. I did try it once. Egg is essentially a good source of protein. You can tell if your hair is lacking protein by doing a strand test. Simply take a strand of hair and pull lightly. If it snaps easily then chances are there maybe a protein deficiency. I would say the overall health of my hair is pretty good. At the time when I tried the yolk it was for experimental use. Well I will say use COLD WATER (lol). I normally wash my hair out in the shower so the water naturally is fairly warm. When I dried off my hair I could tell that some of the egg had actually begun to cook! There was white particles everywhere. I had indeed read that this could happen but I was not expecting a hair omelet!  So yes, if you do feel that your tresses could use a little pick me up try it. You should consult with a doctor if you do have any kind of egg allergies. Just because its all natural doesn't mean there aren't any health risks involved.
